Up: another Pixar Animation classic

The movie starts with a young boy named Carl Fredricksen, a young introverted boy, dreaming of becoming an adventurer like his idol Charles Muntz. His love for adventure lures him to Ellie, who is an extrovert and adventure loving who also idolizes Charles Muntz. Eventually, their love for adventure evolves into a love for each other. They spend a life together dreaming of going to the South America to have an adventure like their idol. But as the years pass by, they find it harder and harder to fund and give time to their planned adventure. Sadly, Ellie died just as Carl bought tickets to fulfill their lifelong dream. This leads Carl to solitude and back into silence, remaining inside of his house until he decides to do what he promised to Ellie.

He ties thousands of balloons filled with helium to his house and plans to reach South America with his house. Carl suddenly becomes accompanied by an overly helpful wilderness explorer/boy scout named Russell. Carl becomes stuck with him when he sees that Russell was in his porch the time he lifted off and he had no where to put him safely down to the ground.

They reach South America by some “sky hazards” like the house being taken into the middle of a storm in the sky and avoiding rock formations while landing roughly. They land short of a few kilometers from their designation (the other side of the mountain top to be exact) and they had to walk the house to their desired spot.

Along the way, they meet a mythical bird which Russell names as Kevin and a talking dog named Doug. The four of them embarks on a mission to reach the destination but takes a lot of detours along the way.

The movie was a very touching one which will lead you in awe and a roller coaster of feelings while watching it. The colorful sets, the humorous characters and the charming plot are unmistakable Pixar animations trademark. Some people would not be attracted by an old grumpy man tying balloons to his house but upon watching the movie during the first 20 minutes, the criticisms lay low and people get hooked to it afterwards.

Tissue is a much needed item while watching this movie. They didn’t show much of your typical crying drama scenes in a movie that make you cry, but they showed it in a way that people of all ages can definitely relate to. As the audience gets older, the more significant the story means. From Russell’s lack of parental support, Carl’s love for his passed wife, Doug wanting to fit in with the other dogs and even Kevin’s maternal instinct to provide food for her babies. It’s not just the person that has the emotional pull, but also the animals. It’s amazing how someone can relate to a character of an animal, I know in myself that I sympathized with Doug and Kevin while watching the movie. My most favorite character was Doug. He made me want to hug my dogs after watching the movie.

Perhaps the most striking line in the movie and a possible moral was ”thanks for the adventure. Now go have one on your own”. It was so striking that the scene that showed it made me and my companions cry.

It’s a very good movie; five stars and two thumbs up!

Modern Day Heroes? NOT!
Sunday, August 9, 2009 @ 8/09/2009 10:37:00 PM
THIS IS JUST AN OPINION/ARTICLE for my Journalism class and made with haste. Although I did not present my thoughts thoroughly, this was made with love. hahaha! What the heck am I talking about?!

I will be honest and say it clearly from here that I am not a Ninoy/Cory Aquino supporter. Should it show in the following statements, understand it from my point of view. It doesn’t hurt to see it from the other side right?

Searching for information about the alleged assassination was quite difficult because there are only a handful of articles that would show me what I wanted to see. People that I would interview only say that “Ninoy Aquino died” and that’s it. No one would tell me what really happened and by this, I suspect that something wasn’t right about this. Why would they call Ninoy Aquino a modern day hero when a lot of people don’t even bother to think of him as one? It’s just a thought.

When Senator Benigno Aquino was assassinated on August 21, 1983, country was shocked its impact drew a string among some Filipino people. His body was shown to the public as a wounded man. The weather during his body was paraded in manila was fine and didn’t rain at all. Many people went to see his casket until his body was finally put to rest in Loyola Memorial Park, Paranaque.

They said that the media coverage of his death was almost the same as Cory’s media coverage. The Marcos’ allowed the media to cover it since the Martial Law had been lifted even August 21st. But now, it is hard to find sources because they said that the Marcos’ hid all the traces of media coverage while still reigning as the President.

To his supporters, his death meant that it was the signal to start a growing revolution. Their instincts said that it was already too much and one by one, they started to go against the Marcos’ and stand up for their democracy.

For me, President Cory’s death is covered by the media too much, it’s intoxicating. I did not feel that there is a great loss for this country; I just felt that its better that she rested. What did the given democracy give us? Nothing but corruption and debt to the World Bank. I’m not saying that she alone caused it, but the works of the post presidents. I don’t believe that her death has a meaning, but for some, it is the end of their democratic faith since her followers treat her as the “saint of democracy”.

The one lesson that we must learn from the Aquino’s Legacy is that, to not make the same mistake twice. The first people power revolution, it was fine at first because the freedom that the people wanted, they got. But eventually, after a few years the problems started building up and until it lead to a second people power when President Estrada was forced to step down and President GMA to step up. The same mistake caused the country a great sacrifice when President GMA started to rule. Our country became the epitome of corruption.

As I watched the interview of Boy Abunda with Kris Aquino, I felt Kris’ sorrow and I guess that the people who watched her interview also felt it. It showed a different side of Mrs. Aquino, it showed her as a mother to her children.

The interview humanized President Cory. Her motherly side showed and she went beyond the face of the democracy and was shown as a normal human being, in service to the Filipino public.

My Sister's Keeper: Definitely a Keeper
Monday, July 27, 2009 @ 7/27/2009 11:59:00 PM

My sister’s keeper is not your contemporary drama film that has its conflicts, it captivates the audience and gives them an unexpected twist that leaves them guessing until the end.

The film starts with Anna (Abigail Breslin) suing her parents for “medical emancipation”, which by that time I thought that the movie was all about the trials as the story unfolds but it goes on a different direction.

As the movie warms up, the story of Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) the eldest daughter gets to be told. She opens her “scrapbook of memories” and different experiences were shown. When her parents Sara (Cameron Diaz) and Brian (Jason Patric) found out that she had Leukemia, they decide to produce a child that will be “genetically designed” to be the most compatible donor for Kate.

From Anna’s birth, she has been harvested for her sister’s needs, may it be blood, bone marrows or whatever body part donation she can provide. She knows about her role in her sister’s life and she hasn’t been complaining about it until now when Kate finally needs one of her kidneys. In my point of view, it seems barbaric to treat a child like she’s some kind of a spare parts cabinet for another child. The needs of another child must not be trounced by the needs of another.

So Anna seeks out the help of an illustrious lawyer (Alec Baldwin) who promises to help her with her appeal. The trial doesn’t play a dominant part in most of the film but the story of how the trial became was shown through back and forth of storytelling throughout the movie.

The movie showed their older brother Jesse (Evan Ellingston) and about how his needs were also trampled upon by Kate’s. Jesse and Anna loved their sister very much and kindly stepped aside for her to be in priority care by their parents. This is usual for families with medical issues but it takes it further when Anna’s needs were put off and she is faced with the decision to say no to her parents. She understood its consequences which Sara was so keen on confronting Anna about.

Sara goes back to her profession on being a lawyer to go against her daughter’s complaint. The Judge (Joan Cusack) also makes her own investigation on the matter.

The movie showed Kate’s love interest, Taylor, (Thomas Dekker) and his struggles with cancer. Kate’s self esteem is heightened by him and as their story goes deeper, Kate & Taylor’s quality of life becomes happier. This showed me that love can go past weaknesses and disabilities can make love go stronger. Days after they go to the hospital prom and make love, Taylor died. His life became complete after experiencing the love that he found in Kate.

Eventually the story goes on as the family continues to struggle with the medical issue. Anna is continually being scrutinized by her mother and the trial goes on. The twist unfolded as Jesse becomes frustrated and forces Anna to reveal the reason why the trial became in the first place. Kate wanted to die and she just couldn’t tell her mother. So Anna tried to cover up her sister’s pain by going against her mother. She would have given the kidney no matter what if Kate hadn’t said no.

When Sara finally faced the truth, Kate died the morning after and Anna won the trial.

I was a little taken off by Sara’s character and could not believe that there were parents like that. Still, who could blame her, she loved her child so much that she was blinded by the needs of her other children. As I said, it was barbaric to treat a child like that.

What I didn’t see was the other side of reality of the story. Sure, Kate’s hardships were shown, the vomiting, the hospitalization, the added pain bought by Taylor’s death but the family was a little too perfect. Money was never an issue in the story. Sara quit her practice as a lawyer and Brian is only a fireman. Are firemen salaries big now? After years of Kate going in and out of the hospital and dozens of operations made on Anna and Kate, had the family never stumbled upon bankruptcy?

Despite everything else, I liked the chemistry of the family and how they acted naturally upon the given situation. The movie gave a heartwarming story with a twist unlike any other. It was successful in making me and the rest of the audience cry.

I give the movie two thumbs up!

Take over, Break's over

During the past three weeks, select Miriam College students have been seen wearing red ribbons pinned on their uniforms. When the students were asked what was the purpose of the ribbons, they said that it was a movement against the school's ADSA or Associate Dean for Student Affairs office.

Apparently, ADSA has been implying rules that are too much for the student body to handle. The most controversial one is that the guards at the entrance gate of the school building "harassed" (the term used by the students) the students who were wearing different I.D. lanyards apart from the original blue and gold lace. Students were treated by the entrance guards in different ways, like giving them sanctions - straight up no excuses, threatening them that if they do not buy a lace that instsant they would be given sanctions and some were just ignored and let pass by the guards. Many say that the monitoring depended on the guard's "PMS" syndrome or moods.

It seems that the school's Council of Leaders (COL) has decided to act upon the newly provisioned rule that ADSA has imposed. At first, the ribbons were misunderstood by the ADSA office and thought that it was an advocacy to fight AIDS or Cancer, this was later cleared up by the COL that adressed ADSA.

"Hindi natin dapat hayaan na ganto tayo itrato ng ADSA at ng mga guards, dapat lumaban tayo at pakinggan ng ADSA ang boses ng mga estudyante!" - Camille Abadicio

As of now, the fight has not affected the ruling of ADSA over the issues that the students are concerned with. COL has and is still recruiting for supporters of the movement. Nobody knows what controversys it will bring along, but we will surely be watching.

The Weed that is Me
Wednesday, July 8, 2009 @ 7/08/2009 09:25:00 PM
Ever since 2003, I have been a huge fan of the popular Taiwanese series "Meteor Garden". The story was so captivating that it let young girls same as myself, come inside the world of a remarkably twisted love story. It was between San Cai, Dao Ming Zi and all the other variables that keep them fighting with each other. All in all, it had two seasons and I got tired of it because the story took so long.

Years later, I discovered a Japanese Remake that is entitled "Hana Yori Dango" which was more comedic than Meteor Garden. The story was a little straighter to the point than the first because it had less "emotional takes" and it finished with only one season.

Then now, years after Meteor Garden and Hana Yori Dango, here comes "Boys Over Flowers", a Korean remake. I just finished the series minutes ago and I am happy that it exceeded my expectations. It was so fun to watch and it was even more straight to the point than the first two versions. Lee Min Ho, the actors who played suited all the their characters and they delivered their roles marvelously.

Being a fan of these series, I can't help but think why my personal love story has to be almost exact as the ones told in them. It's like I star in my own Filipino version of Meteor Garden. Ha Ha! Don't laugh okay?

Like San Cai, Tsukushi & Jan Di, I fell in love with a man that was from a different world, he was Chinese. Most of us know, that Chinese parents prefer Chinese spouses for their children especially their sons. Being me, Fae, the nearest Chinese blood I have is from my grand mum who is half Chinese. Yeah, i know what you think "THAT DOESN'T COUNT!". His name is Kim and we've been going out for 2 1/2 years. Don't relax just yet because I'm just getting started.

We started dating when we were in 4th year high school. Everything was wonderful, but when the graduation outing came, it became the most miserable yet hopeful times of my life. His mother did not approve of us going out, so she deliberately humiliated me, Kim and my mom in front of every classmate we had at 3 in the morning at the beach that we went to. Telling every one that we were doing foolish things in the dark, but in truth, we were just watching the stars with many companions. Kim and I were forced to separate from each other that morning. When he got home, he wasn't fed for days until he grew weak. I was left in my room crying for days.

Months passed, and all the connection we had with each other were secret emails and secret phone calls. Luckily, most of our friends helped us cope with our situation. Until now, we're not allowed to date each other. Good thing we're in college now, a little more freedom helped.

There have been many trials that faced us during these past 2 years, but we've learned to get past it with the our friends who untiringly help us get past this situation.

There's still many years ahead of us, and I doubt that nothing will come up in the future. Thankfully, Love has been our support and strength and it will let us pass through every hardship that we will encounter.

Yes I know, it's "Sobrang Cheesy" but still, what can I do? It's my love story.

♫ Best In Me : Sherwood

Dragons ♥
Thursday, July 2, 2009 @ 7/02/2009 10:01:00 AM

OMFG it's so cold! But I still love it though. I'm wearing a jacket for crying out loud, and I'm still so cold.

In these cold nights, I find myself reminiscing because I saw Aby's HS blogs. I miss the Dragons when we were together and all. We looked after each others’ backs then. Me being an only child, it's like my brothers and sisters disappeared, that's how I feel.

Rica was always there by my side, defending me from math problems, her being my guide back then. I've grown so relied on her; I couldn't pass my College Algebra without her. Nix was always there to make me laugh on sad days. Aby could read my mind and she ends up being my twin soul, she had everything that I wanted, haha, so I just kept her for myself. Kim was just wonderful; we had a great relationship back in HS. Then college came, it's like he took half my heart away with him. Mick was like the walking mirror, so vain and full of himself. He never fails to make me smile.

How Kada 6 was formed, one day it was just Me, Rica, Nix, Aby, Cha & Maine. All of us were so different that we all clicked. Those moments that we always cried almost every day telling stories about our problems and fixing all the scars that were made to one another. Screaming, running & singing Hawthorne Heights till we were alone in the school grounds. Ahhh, the good old days...

Our principal always had it in for us, making us have class in hallways and in the cafeteria. It was like we were an exhibit or something. Ha ha ha! Cancelling and un-cancelling the school play, making us mad like hell.

I would never forget "ton-ton", our physics and CAT moderator. The visayan accent and the gay manerisms. eg. Putting his hands on his waist like a beauty queen and other hand gestures. Ha ha ha! He was like the most discriminated teacher next to Nephtaline, another physics teacher. Ha ha ha! I remember making her cry without even saying a word to her. I just looked at her while she was demo-ing lessons for us (coz she was new) and then the next thing that happened, she was running to our adviser crying and saying that I did a horrible thing to her. Stupid teacher.

The CAT days. My favorite bonding time with the Dragons. it's like we really were one.

Another non-sensical rambling. LOL!
